PHILIPPOTEAUX, HENRI FELIX EMMANUEL (1815-1884)
Album of drawings for Alexandre Dumas Les Trois Mousquetaires laid to sheets of blue paper, approximately forty-two mounted finished sketches on drawing paper, rendered in grisaille in graphite and charcoal, heightened with Chinese white, most 7 x 7 inches (18 x 18 cm). Unsigned, these works are for the edition circa 1850, published by Lecrivain et Toubon. The binding of the album worn, the drawings generally in sound condition with protective guard sheets, but some with traces of discoloration where an applied (probably lead-based) pigment has darkened.
Part of a classic (and oft-reprinted) suite of illustrations for this most popular work of Dumas.
